March 7, 2003, Newsletter Issue #84: Making your own windshield washer fluid

Tip of the Week

Shell Canada: "We don`t know of any home-made substitute for commercially-produced washer fluids. Anything you made yourself would have to include solvents for cleaning, and something to prevent freezing. This would likely require including some kind of chemicals which could prove to be environmentally harmful.

You would also have to be careful that whatever substances you used would not damage the windshield washer pump, and there`s little likelihood that anything you mixed would have nearly the effect of commercial products."

So, as you can see, it`s not a good idea to try to make your own. You could see about buying it in bulk from BJs, Costco, Sam`s, etc. If you don`t want to spend that much money up front and/or want to store that much windshield washer fluid, try getting some of your friends or family into the deal and split it all equally.
