First, book in advance by calling the hotel directly (not using the 800 number for the hotel chain). When on the phone, ask for the best rate available. When you arrive at the hotel, don`t tell them that you have a reservation. Instead, ask once again for the best available rate. If the rate quoted is lower than your reservation rate, simply cancel your reservation and take a room at the quoted rate instead! It`s perfectly legitimate...and it can save you a bundle.
