November 7, 2003, Newsletter Issue #119: Help Those in Need this Holiday Season

Tip of the Week

The Amvet`s are in need of some assistance collecting these items. Send them the cheapest way that you can - there`s no need to FedEx them, or anything like that. Parcel post is fine. Here is the list of items that the Auxiliary is collecting:

Expired coupons, up to 1 year past expiration date, are saved and sent to military bases all over the world! The Auxiliary Sends them to bases that only used expired coupons up to 6 months past their expiration date. Then, these bases take out the ones that they donít want/need, and then pass them on to the bases that can use them up to a year past the expiration date.

Cancelled stamps, only the stamp, not the part with the date, are somehow used as money to help purchase school buses in under developed countries. Not sure of the entire process, but this is why they collect them.

Boxtops for Education AND Campbell`s Labels for Education are sent to schools that are in desperate needs of supplies and/or equipment. There are some schools out here that canít even afford paper. Now that politicians want to cut more money from education, they are going to need more help than before. (Plus, if those fires don`t stop burning in California, the price of paper will be sky-rocketing!).

Prescription/pill bottles are saved because there are some countries that are so ďpoorĒ that they canít afford prescription bottles. Over here, it is illegal to re-use prescription bottles. But in these other countries, they donít have these laws, because they need all of the help that they can get!

Tabs from cans of soda/beer are uses for the Shriner`s Hospital. After the tabs are collected, the tabs are put through a special magnet to remove impurities, and then each batch is visually checked by volunteers. The tabs are barreled up, weighed and redeemed for cash. The money is used by the Shrinerís for items not included in their burn center`s budget, such as bookcases, wheelchairs and high chairs.

Used greeting cards, the front part where the picture is, are used in the schools and childrenís hospitals. They make their own cards, ornaments, and other crafts with them.

Please mention the name Deirdre when you send these donations, so that the Auxiliary knows how you heard about them. Please send the donation to:
